Brand #68 - Graphic Crisis and Chance

In the winter of 2022, the BrandD editorial department began discussing what would bring revolutionary changes to graphic design, which has been dominated by Western design aesthetics. Moreover, AI technology has been updated like never before. How should graphic designers face the industry's crisis?

While researching graphic crises, we discovered that crises can be turned into opportunities, and we ultimately decided on the theme "Graphic Crisis and Chance" for this issue.

Starting from the history of graphic design, we reflected on the challenges faced by designers in different eras and how they overcame them. At the same time, we also explored the topic with designers, collected works using a variety of mediums, and compiled ten solutions to get out of the crisis.

Design is still evolving because the crisis never ends. As Ralph Kaplan said: Thinking about design is difficult, but not thinking can be disastrous.

In addition, this issue is a collaboration with famous artist Yoshitomo Nara, inspired by the free spirit and experiments to break down the boundaries between design and art and expand the graphic world.
