In 1987, Jean-Charles Sarrazin was given a rare opportunity: he became the first recipient of a French scholarship to study at the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts in Vietnam.
During that year, the young man met many Vietnamese students, lecturers, and artists. Riding around on bicycles and trams, he joined them in exploring Hanoi, visiting nearby provinces, attending traditional festivals, and admiring village pagodas. Jean-Charles always carried two 24x46 cameras with him one for black-and-white photos and the other for color.
Forty years later, Jean-Charles Sarrazin returns with this book, a visual memoir of Hanoi during the post war period as the country began its Đổi Mới reform era. These authentic and evocative photographs recall a time that was both challenging and peaceful, chaotic yet full of hope. No matter how things have changed, all of it has become history and history shapes who we are today
