“She peels back the layers of her past and former selves; sixteen simple black-and-white segments sketch out multiple facets of her identity, revealing her true self. Confusion and sorrow coexist with sweetness and warmth; embarrassment and bitterness run alongside courage and innocence. Layer by layer, the private notes become layers of spiritual resonance. Winner of the 2018 Harvey Award and the 2019 Eisner Award for Best Foreign Work, she returns with a work that is both fair-minded and tinged with bittersweet self-mockery.”
From ages 6 to 20, the author captures sixteen moments from her life. These slices of experience, laid out one after another, form the person she is today. The death of a beloved pet, early lessons about sex, quarrels with close friends, bodily changes and sensations, studying abroad, a youthful crush, farewells to loved ones… Some stories are big, some small; some are deeply meaningful, others seem light or trivial. Yet each is a moment etched into memory, shaping a life in quiet, lasting ways. This “private notebook” of a book lays bare her treasured memories with complete honesty.
