Tales of Pirx the Pilot - Stanisław Lem

Brand: Penguin Classics   |   Status: Còn hàng

"I'm fairly new to Lem's writings (although very familiar with the movie versions of Solaris). I recently read Eden, which I found addictive in it's descriptions of an alien planet and it's almost cold, methodical way of storytelling. Pirx is different, in that there is humour (often bleak and black), and a kind of steampunk, industrially pessimistic outlook on what the future will look like. It put me in mind of Ridley Scott's vision of space travel from Alien, oily, noisy ships constantly needing repaired, clanking chains, leaking reactors, grime everywhere, and I think this atmosphere is part of the whole vibe that appealed to me. This book is a quick, easy read, but also thoughtful in a world-weary way." - Amazon Customer Reviews

From 'A giant of twentieth-century science fiction' (Guardian), the adventures of Pirx, a hapless everyman in outer space

'By now he fancied himself something of a rocket jockey, a space ace, whose real home was among the planets'

In a future where space travel has become routine and unremarkable, Pirx the pilot bumbles and daydreams his way through the solar system. These endearing tales follow his progress from cadet to captain. But, whether he is wrestling with a misbehaving spacesuit, feeling uncomfortable on a luxury space cruise ship or encountering a mysterious malfunctioning robot on a mission to Mars, the hapless Pirx just can't stop things from going terribly wrong.
